Château d'Annecy

The Château d'Annecy, also called the Musée-Château, rises on a hill above the old town and the lake, and its grey walls and towers are among the first things you notice from the canal-lined streets below. This fortress in France grew over several centuries from the Middle Ages onward. It was the seat of the Counts of Geneva before passing to the House of Savoy, and its buildings reflect that long span: stern medieval defences stand beside later living quarters with a more domestic, Renaissance feel.

The architecture is a patchwork rather than a single plan. The Tour de la Reine is one of the oldest and most imposing parts of the complex, and the Vieux Logis, the old residence building, contains the entrance and some of the earliest domestic rooms. The courtyard, with its mixture of facades and stairs, gives a good sense of how the castle was added to and adapted over time. In later centuries it lost its princely role and was used as military barracks before the city acquired it in the twentieth century and turned it into a museum.

Today the museum presents the heritage of Annecy and the surrounding Haute-Savoie. Collections include objects from the region's lakes, among them finds of underwater archaeology, along with local furniture, art and traditions from the Middle Ages to modern times. Interactive displays help explain how the town developed around the lake, the river Thiou and its canals, and how trade, crafts and religious life shaped it. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly, and the rooms are arranged so that a visit moves naturally through the castle's different periods.

The castle also works as a viewpoint. From its terraces and windows you look down over the tangle of red-tiled roofs, the canals of the old town and the blue stretch of Lake Annecy framed by mountains. It is an excellent place to get oriented at the start of a stay, and just as rewarding late in the day when the light on the water softens.

The building is a protected Historical Monument, and the museum suits visitors who like history presented in an authentic setting rather than a purpose-built gallery. Allow roughly an hour or two depending on interest. The climb up from the old town is short but steep, so comfortable shoes help. After your visit, the nearby Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, the Palais de l'Isle and the covered market streets are an easy continuation, and the lake itself is a short walk away.
