Paris

Paris, located in the Île-de-France region, is the capital and largest city of France. Its history dates back to the 3rd century BC when the Parisii, a Gallic tribe, settled on the banks of the Seine. The city evolved from a small Roman town called Lutetia into a major medieval centre of learning and religion, home to one of Europe's first universities, the Sorbonne. During the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, Paris became a hub for philosophy, science and the arts. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, profoundly shaped the city's political landscape and global influence. In the 19th century, under Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann, Paris was transformed with wide boulevards, parks and iconic public buildings, creating the modern cityscape known today.

The main attractions in Paris are numerous and globally significant. The Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 World's Fair, is the city's most recognizable symbol, offering panoramic views from its three levels. Close by, the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie are two more survivors of the medieval palace. The Arc de Triomphe, located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, honors those who fought for France and offers views down the grand avenue. Other key sites include the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre, the Musée d'Orsay with its Impressionist collection, the Centre Pompidou, the Panthéon, Les Invalides and the Palais Garnier, while the Palace of Versailles lies just outside the city center and makes a full-day excursion.

The Musée Rodin, the Musée Carnavalet on the history of Paris, the Musée Jacquemart-André and the Musée Guimet cover sculpture, history, decorative arts and Asian arts, and the Père Lachaise Cemetery draws visitors to the graves of artists and writers. Squares such as the Place des Vosges, the Place Vendôme and the Place de la Concorde show different periods of urban design, and neighborhoods such as Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Canal Saint-Martin have their own character and cafe culture.

Activities in Paris range from leisurely strolls to cultural immersion. Visitors can cruise along the Seine, explore the charming streets of Le Marais, or relax in the Luxembourg Gardens. The city offers extensive shopping opportunities, from high-end boutiques on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré to vintage markets in Saint-Ouen. Dining is a central part of the Parisian experience, with everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to traditional bistros and crêperies, and open-air markets such as the Marché d'Aligre are good places to taste. Getting to Paris is convenient via Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY) airports, with extensive international flight connections, and by high-speed trains from across France and Europe. The city is well-served by the RER and Métro systems, making navigation easy. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also widely available. The best time to visit is from April to June and September to October, when the weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. July and August are warm and busy, with long daylight hours but larger crowds, and some smaller businesses close in August. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer crowds, making them suitable for exploring the city's parks and gardens. Winter is cooler and quieter, offering a magical atmosphere with Christmas markets and fewer tourists.
