The Marché Forville is the main covered market of Cannes, set a few steps from the Vieux Port at the foot of the old quarter of Le Suquet. It is the place where locals and restaurant chefs buy their produce, and a visit offers an authentic taste of everyday Provençal life away from the glamour of the Croisette.

Under the market's roof, stalls are piled high with seasonal fruit and vegetables from local growers, alongside fish from the bay, cheeses, olives, tapenade, herbs, spices and flowers. Small producers sell their own goods next to professional traders, and the atmosphere is liveliest early in the morning. Around the market, cafés, bakeries and delicatessens, as well as the nearby Rue Meynadier, make it easy to put together a picnic for a trip to the Lérins Islands.

The food market is held in the mornings from Tuesday to Sunday, while on Mondays the hall hosts a flea market selling antiques and second-hand objects. Arrive early for the best choice and to avoid the crowds. Entry is free, and a visit can easily be combined with the climb up to Le Suquet.

Best Time to Visit

May to June and September are the most pleasant, with warm weather and fewer crowds than July and August; the film festival in May brings glamour but very high prices and booked-out hotels.
