Place des Lices

Place des Lices is a historic square in the heart of Saint-Tropez, serving as a central hub for local life and tourism. Its name derives from the medieval term for a jousting ground, reflecting its historical use for tournaments dating back to the 9th or 10th century. The current layout was established in the early 1800s with the planting of twelve plane trees, which grow to about 60 feet tall. These trees create seven arcades and a canopy of dappled sunlight, a scene that has remained largely unchanged since at least 1936.

The square is famous for its fresh Provençal produce market, held every Tuesday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. While the market is a major attraction, vendors typically source produce from regional wholesale centers like Draguignan rather than growing it themselves. On non-market days, the area serves as a gathering spot for locals and visitors playing boules, offering an authentic glimpse into the local atmosphere. The square is also noted for its cultural significance, having been painted by Fauvist artist Camoin.
