Vallon de la Loue

The Vallon de la Loue in Ornans, located in the Jura Mountains of the Franche-Comté region, is a picturesque landscape defined by the winding River Loue. Ornans, often nicknamed the "Little Venice of Franche-Comté," features historic houses overhanging the river, connected by two 17th-century stone bridges. The area is renowned for its wild, romantic, and mystical atmosphere, offering a distinct contrast to the surrounding plateau.

The valley is a hub for outdoor activities, including canoeing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. The Loue River is celebrated for its crystal-clear water and rapids. A notable natural feature is the Loue River Source near Ouhans, which is the largest spring in the Jura Mountains, emerging from a vast cave at the foot of a 106-meter cliff. A 6km hiking trail connects this source to Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, while the Loue Trail in Ornans includes ten information centers.

Culturally, the area is significant as the birthplace of realist painter Gustave Courbet. His former home now houses the Musée Courbet, dedicated to his works. Ornans also features twelve listed or classified historic monuments, including the 16th-century Church of Saint-Laurent with its Romanesque bell tower and the 15th-century Hôtel de Grospian. Visitors can enjoy panoramic viewpoints and romantic walks in the town center, such as at the "Miroir de la Loue."
