Basilica of Saint-Philibert

The Basilica of Saint-Philibert in Tournus is a significant Romanesque masterpiece and one of the few remaining 11th-century monastic complexes in France. The site’s history dates back to the 4th century with an oratory built over the tomb of Saint Valerian, evolving into a Benedictine monastery in the 6th century. In 875, monks from Noirmoutier, fleeing Norman invasions, brought the relics of Saint Philbert to the site. Major construction occurred between the mid-10th and 12th centuries, resulting in a structure featuring unique architectural elements such as transverse barrel vaults and a strikingly lit nave.

The complex comprises the abbey church, cloister, chapter house, refectory, and cellar. It survived the French Revolution by serving as a "Temple of Reason" and has undergone various restorations, including facade repairs in the late 20th century and new stained glass installations in the mid-20th century.
