Bordeaux Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-André)

Bordeaux Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-André) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most significant religious monument in Bordeaux, located near the Town Hall. Originally built in the 11th century and consecrated in 1096, the structure evolved from Romanesque to a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with its current form dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. It features a heterogeneous Gothic style, distinguished by its freestanding bell tower and a well-restored 13th-century royal entrance.

The cathedral holds significant historical importance, hosting the 1137 marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII, as well as the wedding of Anne of Austria and Louis XIII. During the French Revolution, it suffered severe neglect and damage, including a devastating 19th-century fire. It was repurposed as a fodder store and a "Temple of Reason," and its valuable liturgical art was requisitioned by the state. Much of the current furniture was replaced with items taken from other churches. Today, it serves as a museum housing a 15th-century Gothic altarpiece.

Opening hours vary by season. In summer, the cathedral is open daily with extended evening hours until 7:30 pm. In winter, hours are reduced, generally closing between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm depending on the day. Accessibility is facilitated by nearby public car parks (Pey-Berland, Saint Christoly, Republique) and Tram lines A or B, with the 'Hotel de Ville' stop being the closest. Visitors can explore the luminous interior and appreciate the architectural evolution that defines this landmark.
