Cap Canaille

Cap Canaille, located between Cassis and La Ciotat, is the highest maritime cliff in Europe, rising 394 meters above sea level. This dramatic natural landmark features striking red, ochre, and gold cliffs formed from Cretaceous marl and sandstone. The site offers panoramic views of the Bay of Cassis, the Calanques National Park, and the surrounding Provence massifs.

Visitors can explore the area via the Route des Crêtes, a 15-kilometer panoramic road that links the two towns. Since 2024, this route is pedestrianized every Sunday, allowing for a gentle experience with access reserved for pedestrians and soft transport modes. A shuttle bus operates from the Cassis Gorguettes car park to the route on these days. On weekdays, access is generally open, but restrictions may apply from June 1 to September 30 due to fire regulations.

The area is popular for hiking, with trails offering medium-difficulty routes that take approximately three hours to complete. The landscape is fragile, so visitors are advised to stay on signposted paths and keep a safe distance from the cliff edges. It is essential to bring at least one to two liters of water and wear appropriate footwear. The cliffs are also subject to closure during strong winds, such as the mistral.
