Church of Sainte-Foy

Romanesque basilica on the Camino de Santiago

9.2/10
#1 of 2 in Conques

The Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy in Conques is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, built in the 11th and 12th centuries. It serves as a crucial stop on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church’s history is marked by the acquisition of the relics of Sainte Foy, a fourth-century martyr, in 866. The structure has survived various challenges, including a collapsed lantern tower and fires, undergoing constant restoration to preserve its integrity.

Visitors are drawn to the church’s striking features, particularly the "Tympanum of the Last Judgement" above the main door, which displays 124 carved figures. The interior also showcases numerous capitals and contemporary stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages, adding a modern artistic dimension to the historic space. The village of Conques, recognized as one of France’s "Most Beautiful Villages," provides a picturesque setting for this architectural wonder.
