Église Saint-Étienne

Eguisheim is a small wine village a few kilometres south-west of Colmar, and its shape is what first catches the eye. The streets run in concentric rings around the old castle at the centre, so walking the outer lane, the Rue du Rempart, takes you in a slow circle past tightly packed half-timbered houses with flower-filled windows. The Église Saint-Étienne belongs to this compact historic core, and a visit to it fits into the same loop as the castle, the market square and the cellars.

The village has a place in religious history. Eguisheim is the birthplace of Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsbourg, who became Pope Leo IX in 1049, and the small castle at the centre of the village is traditionally linked to his family. A chapel dedicated to him stands in the castle grounds, and a fountain and a statue mark the square nearby. The Counts of Eguisheim were powerful in Alsace during the Middle Ages, and the circular plan of the village is generally thought to reflect the shape of the earlier fortification around the castle. This background explains why the village's churches and chapels receive visitors interested in pilgrimage as well as architecture.

Churches in Alsace often combine several periods in a single building, with medieval walls and towers alongside later restorations, and visitors can expect a calm, relatively plain interior with altars, statues and stained glass that reflect local devotion. Entry is free, and the church is normally open during the day, but as it is an active place of worship, quiet behaviour and modest dress are expected, and the doors may be closed during services or private events.

Outside, Eguisheim rewards slow walking. The Place du Marché and the Place du Château Saint-Léon are the main gathering points, with fountains, cafés and wine cellars. The Maison du Vin gives an overview of the local wines, and the vineyards that climb the slopes behind the village produce Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and other varieties, including grapes grown on several Grand Cru sites. Trails through the vines begin at the edge of the village, and the Route des Vins d'Alsace passes through it. The Musée de la Poupée, a doll museum, is a small diversion for families.

Spring, when the village is in bloom, and autumn, when the harvest is under way, are favourite times to come, although the Christmas market also draws a crowd and the village is busy at weekends in summer. For a quieter experience, arrive early in the morning or stay for the evening, when day-trippers have left and the church and lanes are peaceful. The church suits travellers interested in Alsatian heritage, couples enjoying the village's charm and anyone combining Colmar and the wine route in a single day.
