Vineyard Trails (Route des Vins d'Alsace)

Eguisheim sits on the Route des Vins d'Alsace, the signposted wine road that threads along the foothills of the Vosges from Marlenheim, west of Strasbourg, down to Thann, south of Colmar. The road took shape in 1953 and ties together dozens of wine villages, but Eguisheim is one of the places where you can step straight off the tarmac and into the vines. Footpaths and farm tracks leave the edge of the village and climb through the slopes, passing the grand cru hillsides of Eichberg and Pfersigberg, where Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat ripen on south-east facing terraces.

The walk begins with the village itself. Eguisheim is laid out in concentric rings around its castle, so the streets curve rather than run straight, and the half-timbered houses are packed with flower boxes and painted in warm colours. The Place du Château marks the centre, and inside the old castle enclosure stands the Chapelle Saint-Léon, a reminder that Pope Leo IX, born Bruno of Eguisheim, came from this family of local counts. Climb a few minutes uphill and the pattern of the rings becomes clear from above, with the rooftops spilling out below you.

Once among the vines, the signboards along the marked vineyard path explain the grape varieties, the soils and the yearly cycle of the work, and the views run across the Rhine plain toward the Black Forest on a clear day. Above the village you can see the three ruined towers known as the Trois Châteaux d'Husseren-les-Châteaux on the ridge, a good target for a longer hike. Cyclists can follow quiet vineyard lanes between Eguisheim and neighbouring villages, and there are guided and motorised tours as well, though the best way to see the place is on foot at an easy pace.

The seasons shape the experience. Spring brings fresh green shoots, summer the heavy canopy and long evening light, and autumn the harvest, when pickers, tractors and the smell of must fill the lanes and villages hold wine festivals. Winter is quieter, with bare vines and clear air.

In the village you can taste at family domaines, many of them open to walk-in visitors, and the Maison du Vin is the natural first stop for orientation. Eguisheim is small enough to combine the vineyard trail with a slow loop through the Place du Marché and the Église Saint-Étienne in a single half-day. The trail suits walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants Alsace wine country at the pace of a stroll, rather than from a car window.
