The Église Saint-Pierre is the small parish church of Mont-Saint-Michel, standing beside the Grande Rue halfway up the rock. While the abbey at the summit has always belonged to the monks, this church served the village that grew up on the lower slopes, and it remains a place of prayer for residents and pilgrims. Built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries, with later alterations, it is partly set into the granite of the Mont, which gives it an unusual, irregular shape.

A statue of Joan of Arc stands at the entrance, and inside the church is a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael with a statue of the archangel covered in silver, a focus of devotion for pilgrims who come to the Mont. The interior is modest and dimly lit, with banners, votive offerings and side chapels that reflect centuries of pilgrimage. Its calm atmosphere is a contrast to the bustle of the shops and restaurants just outside.

Entry is free, and the church is easily combined with the climb to the abbey. Visitors are welcome outside service times, and should keep in mind that it is an active place of worship. A short stop here adds a quieter, more personal side to a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel.
