The Grand Aquarium de Saint-Malo is one of the largest public aquariums in western France and a favourite family outing on the Emerald Coast. Opened in 1996, it stands in the La Madeleine district on the southern edge of the town, a few kilometres from the walled city, and presents marine life from the waters of Brittany and the Channel to tropical reefs and distant oceans.
The visit follows a series of themed areas with large tanks and smaller displays of fish, rays, crustaceans and other sea creatures. A highlight is the ring-shaped tank where fish circle around the visitors, giving the impression of standing in the open sea, and a large basin holds sharks. The Nautibus, a small simulated submarine ride, takes children on an imaginary dive, and educational panels explain the ecosystems of the coast, including the tides and the creatures of the rock pools that visitors can see on the beaches of Saint-Malo.
The aquarium is open year-round and makes a good option on rainy days. Allow two hours or more for the visit. Tickets are cheaper when booked online, and opening hours change with the seasons, so check the official website before going. It is easiest to reach by car or by local bus from the town centre.
