Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux

The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, also known as the Opéra National de Bordeaux, is an iconic 18th-century neo-classical opera house located at Place de la Comédie, 33000 Bordeaux. Designed by architect Victor Louis and inaugurated in 1780, the building is notable for being one of the few remaining theatres built entirely of wood and for standing on the site of an ancient Roman temple. The structure measures 47 meters long, 19 meters high, and 88 meters wide. Its classical design features 12 Corinthian columns adorned with carvings of Greek goddesses of music and poetry. The interior grand staircase is modeled after the Opera Garnier in Paris.

Following extensive restoration work completed in 1990 to restore its original glory, the building now serves as the headquarters of the Opéra National de Bordeaux. Visitors can explore the exterior, vestibule, grand staircase, and auditorium through 50-minute guided tours available in French, English, or Spanish on selected days. These tours cost €10 per person and accommodate groups of 2–20 participants. Visitors are required to arrive 5 minutes early, and the site is accessible to people with disabilities.
