Jardin des Salins

The Plage des Salins, sometimes called the Jardin des Salins, is a wild-looking beach on the coast east of Saint-Tropez, on the peninsula that stretches toward Cape Camarat, and it is one of the quieter and more natural beaches near the famous resort. It lies at the foot of the Cap des Salins, a wooded headland, and it is about 600 metres long, a curve of fine sand and a few pebbles, with pine trees running down almost to the water's edge. The pines give shade at the back of the beach, and the scent of resin on a warm day is part of the character of the place.

The name comes from the salt pans that once existed behind the shore, the salins, where seawater was evaporated to produce salt, and the area, with its ponds and marshes, is now protected as part of a coastal conservation area. The water is clear and transparent, and the sea floor is partly covered with Posidonia, a seagrass that forms meadows in the Mediterranean and that is essential to the health of the sea, since it provides a nursery for fish and produces oxygen. The dry leaves of the plant often form banks on the sand, called banquettes, which are left in place on purpose because they protect the beach from erosion, so do not be surprised to find brown piles of leaves at the water's edge. The effect is natural and not a sign of dirt.

Compared with the beaches of Pampelonne, famous for their beach clubs, music and crowds, the Salins is calmer and less commercial, though it is still busy in July and August. There is a beach club that offers rental of loungers and parasols and a small restaurant, along with a first-aid post in summer, but much of the beach is free and unspoilt. Views toward the sea show the Mediterranean and, on the headland, some of the luxury villas that are discreetly hidden among the trees. The beach is sheltered from some winds but can be exposed to others, so check the weather.

A path leads to the beach from the road, and free parking is available nearby, although it fills quickly in summer, so go early. Rules apply to dogs, which are not permitted on the sand, and fire is strictly forbidden in the pine woods. Bring water and sunscreen, as shade is limited on the sand itself.

The beach suits families, swimmers and walkers, and it is a short drive from the Port de Saint-Tropez, the Place des Lices and the Citadelle. The coastal path leads to Cap Taillat and Cape Camarat for walkers.
