Musée de Cassis

The Musée de Cass, officially known as the Musée d’Art et Traditions Populaires, is located in the heart of Cassis, just a short walk from the port. Housed in a historic 17th-century presbytery, the museum offers a quiet and reflective atmosphere for visitors interested in local history and culture. The collection is divided into distinct sections, including fine art, archaeology, and ethnography, providing a comprehensive look at the region’s heritage.

The art collection features works by local artists, including the notable contributions of Marius and Eugénie Guindon, whose 1910 donation forms the core of the museum’s holdings. The archaeology section showcases artifacts from the region’s ancient past, including Roman remains and items discovered through local excavations. This section was expanded in 2010 to include underwater finds, highlighting the area’s maritime history. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to explore new themes and perspectives.

The museum is open year-round, with operating hours from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free, making it an accessible option for all visitors. However, the building is not fully accessible to those with mobility impairments, as it lacks elevator access. Guided tours are available for groups, but advance reservation is required. The museum provides a peaceful and informative experience, offering a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context of the Cassis region.
