9.1/10
#4 of 5 in Montauban

The Musée Ingres-Bourdelle in Montauban occupies a historic 17th-century former episcopal palace, originally built in 1664 by Bishop Pierre de Bertier on the ruins of a medieval fort. This architectural setting, featuring Gothic dungeons and Baroque halls, provides a rich backdrop for the museum’s extensive art collections. The institution is uniquely dedicated to the legacy of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, the renowned Neoclassical master born in Montauban, as well as the sculptor Émile-Antoine Bourdelle.

Visitors explore thousands of Ingres’ drawings, canvases, and personal items, offering an intimate look at his creative process. The museum also houses monumental works by Bourdelle, highlighting the region’s significant contribution to French art history. The building itself is a cultural landmark, containing the 14th-century "Hall of the Black Prince" and interiors dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. Views of the Tarn River from the grounds add to the serene atmosphere.

The museum is located at 19 Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville. Opening hours vary by season: from January 1 to April 30, it is open Tuesday–Friday from 10:00–17:30 and Saturday–Sunday from 10:00–19:00. From May 1 to September 30, hours extend to 19:00 on weekends and Thursdays remain open until 21:00. The venue is closed on January 1, May 1, November 1, and December 25. Admission is €10 for full price and €5 for reduced rates, including CEZAM cardholders. This combination of historical architecture and world-class art makes the museum a essential stop for travelers interested in French heritage.
