Parc des Sources

The Parc des Sources is the historic park of Vichy and the centre of the spa town. It lies along the Allier river and the old springs, laid out as a place where the people who came to take the waters could stroll between treatments. The first plantings date from the early nineteenth century, around 1812, when the area, previously marshy, was drained and laid out, and the park was extended in the 1860s under Napoleon III, who visited Vichy several times and gave the town its elegant spa architecture. It is the oldest park in the town and still the setting for walks, concerts and spa life.

The landscape is typical of a nineteenth-century spa park. Long avenues of plane and lime trees run beside the lawns, with wide paths, benches and flowerbeds, and the old iron-and-glass galleries provided shelter from rain and sun. The most important building is the Hall des Sources, completed in 1903 to a design by the architect Charles Le Cœur, a graceful structure of iron and glass in the Art Nouveau style, where the main springs rise and where visitors can still taste the mineral water from taps. The water of Vichy is rich in bicarbonate, and its different springs, such as the Grande Grille, the Chomel and the Lucas, vary in temperature and taste. A music kiosk stands in the park for concerts, and the Casino de Vichy and the opera, with its theatre, lie at the edge.

Vichy was inscribed in 2021 on the UNESCO World Heritage list as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, a group of eleven towns in seven countries that developed around mineral springs and show the architecture of the spa culture of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. The park is a central part of that recognition. In recent years the park has been the subject of a major renovation project, with work extending into 2026 to redesign the main spaces and improve access for pedestrians, so some areas may be closed or changed when you visit.

The park is open to the public with no fee, and a stroll takes an hour or two, with a visit to the Hall des Sources for a taste of the water. The park is attractive in all seasons, but best in spring and summer, when the trees are in leaf and the concerts are in progress. Nearby streets have shops, cafés and the Boulevard de la République, and the Jardin des Sources and the Église Saint-Louis are close. The Hôtel du Parc, where the government of the wartime Vichy regime sat, stands near the park.
