Place du Rosaire in Lourdes serves as the central square leading to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, a major spiritual destination that welcomes over 3.5 million visitors annually. The square is dominated by the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the adjacent Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. The latter is a striking example of Romano-Byzantine architecture, featuring a Greek cross layout spanning 2,000 square meters. Its interior is distinguished by extensive Venetian mosaic decorations covering 2,000 square meters, along with 39 paintings of saints and 52 gemmaux. This basilica acts as the pedestal for the larger upper basilica, creating a layered architectural experience for visitors.
The square itself is a hub of activity, connecting the various religious sites and offering a space for reflection amidst the crowds. Visitors often gather here before proceeding to the Grotto of Massabielle or participating in the daily processions and Masses scheduled throughout the day. The atmosphere is one of solemnity and reverence, reflecting Lourdes’ status as a global pilgrimage site.
For practical planning, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM between April 4 and November 1, 2026. During the winter months, from November 2 to December 31, hours are adjusted to 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM. While the square is always accessible, checking the daily schedule for Masses and processions is advisable for those wishing to participate in specific liturgical events. The location at 1 Avenue Monseigneur Théas is easily navigable, serving as a key entry point to the sanctuary’s extensive grounds.
