Underground Galleries

The Underground Galleries of Provins are a mysterious medieval attraction located within the UNESCO-listed medieval city. Likely originally quarried for fuller’s earth to support the local cloth industry, these extensive cavities served various purposes over time, including hiding places, storage during the Champagne Fairs, places of worship, and potentially freemason lodges. The network consists of several hundred rooms in the Upper City and dozens in the Lower City.

Visits are strictly by guided tour only, with groups limited to 25 people to ensure safety and preservation. Tours are available in French and English, though some sources note that certain tours may be in French only. Tickets start from €4, and a "Pass Provins" is also available, which includes access to the undergrounds. The galleries are open from March 28 to July 3. Hours vary by day and season, generally running from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM on weekends and holidays, with specific weekday slots during school holidays. Guided tours operate on weekends from 11:30 AM, 2:40 PM, and 3:30 PM.

The constant temperature inside is 13°C, so visitors are advised to bring a layer for their shoulders. The site is located at 3 rue Saint-Thibault, 77160 Provins.
