The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is an iconic religious heritage site in Lyon, France, situated on Fourvière Hill, where Romans founded the city in 43 BC. Construction began in 1872 and was inaugurated in 1896, with interior decorations completed after World War II under architect Louis Sainte-Marie-Perrin. Described as a "Marian fortress," the basilica measures 86 meters in length and features a blend of Byzantine and medieval architectural styles. Its white marble walls are adorned with colorful stained glass depicting biblical scenes and intricate mosaics, including six tracing the Virgin Mary’s history.

Key attractions include a golden statue of the Virgin Mary and a viewing platform on the left side offering panoramic views of Lyon. The esplanade also features a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II by Elisabeth Cibot. The interior houses a sober crypt dedicated to Saint Joseph, featuring a statue by Joseph-Hugues Fabisch, and an organ built in 1896 by Michel Merklin.
