Calanques National Park

Calanques National Park is France’s tenth national park and the only one in Europe to combine land, sea, and urban areas. Established on April 18, 2012, it stretches over 20 km of coastline between Marseille, Cassis, and La Ciotat. The park covers a terrestrial area of 8,500 hectares and a marine area of 43,500 hectares. It is renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and over 25 stunning coves featuring pebble and fine sand beaches. Entry to the park is free, allowing visitors to explore its diverse landscapes without admission fees.

Visitors can engage in hiking, swimming, and kayaking while preserving the area's exceptional biodiversity. The Calanque de Sugiton is the easiest and most popular access point, featuring distinct trails and beautiful water. A round-trip hike takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. It is accessible by taking the B1 Bus from Place Castellane to the Luminy PN des Calanques stop. Another notable site is the Calanque de Morgiou, a narrow, deep creek south of Marseille. This secret spot features a small pebbled beach and colorful traditional fishing huts known as cabanons. It is reached on foot in about an hour from the Luminy massif.

The park offers a unique mix of hiking and swimming opportunities amidst rocky mountains bordering the Mediterranean. While specific opening hours for the entire park are not defined due to its natural status, individual trails and beaches are accessible during daylight hours. Travelers are advised to check local conditions for safety, particularly regarding fire risks or weather.
