Anthropological museum in Marseille's historic Fort Saint...
The MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) in Marseille is a prominent cultural institution located on the waterfront next to the 13th-century Fort Saint-Jean. Designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, the contemporary building connects to the historic fort via a footbridge and features rooftop gardens with panoramic views. The museum serves as the heir to the Musée d’Ethnographie du Trocadéro and the Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires, focusing on ethnographic collections related to Europe and the Mediterranean.
Visitors can explore an anthropological journey through Mediterranean history, from the past to the present. A single ticket covers all permanent and temporary exhibitions at the J4 building and Fort Saint-Jean. Standard admission is €9.50, with free entry on the first Sunday of the month. Combined tickets for admission and a guided tour cost €14, and a multimedia guide is available for an additional €3.50. The museum is open every day except Tuesday. Hours vary by season: from November 5 to April 30, it is open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM; from May 2 to July 6, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM; and from July 7 to September 2, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Facilities include four food courts, three bookshops, and a rooftop restaurant. Visitors are advised to allocate two hours to half a day for their visit. Currently, the museum is closed, with upcoming hours listed as 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. A featured exhibition, "Mossi Traoré: Fashion, Too," runs from May 20 to November 16, 2026. The Conservation and Resource Centre at 1 Rue Clovis Hugues is also part of the institution, with free access to its outdoor areas.
