Breton Gothic cathedral with openwork spires

8.1/10
#2 of 5 in Quimper

The Cathédrale Saint-Corentin in Quimper is a significant example of Breton Gothic architecture, often described as a jewel of the region. Located at Place Saint-Corentin, the cathedral serves as the spiritual center of the diocese and a key landmark in Brittany. Its construction began in 1239 under Bishop Raynaud, replacing an earlier Romanesque structure. The choir vaults were completed by 1410, followed by the nave and façade towers in 1424. Major restorations in the 19th century, led by architect Joseph Bigot, added the distinctive openwork spires and replaced stained glass lost during the French Revolution. A later restoration campaign from 1989 to 1999 revealed the cathedral’s original 15th-century appearance, including polychrome ribs in yellow and red ochre.

Visitors are encouraged to spend one to two hours exploring the interior. The space is characterized by its grandeur, intricate stone carvings, and the interplay of light through ancient stained glass windows. The two giant spires are iconic symbols of Quimper, visible from many parts of the city. The cathedral is named after Saint Corentin, the first bishop of the Kingdom of Cornouaille, who is associated with local legends involving King Gradlon.

Opening hours typically run from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, though these may vary. For the most current information, visitors can contact the cathedral at +33-2-98-64-91-84 or visit the diocese website. The site offers a quiet atmosphere for reflection, contrasting with the bustling market squares nearby. It is an essential stop for those interested in medieval history and religious art in Brittany.
