#4 of 5 in Quimper

The Musée Départemental Breton in Quimper is housed in the historic 16th-century Palace of the Bishops of Cornouaille, located adjacent to Saint-Corentin Cathedral. Established in 1846 by the Finistère archaeological society, it is the oldest museum in the department and one of the first in France to focus on regional ethnography and folk art. The museum serves as a primary archive for the history, ethnography, and regional arts of Finistère.

Collections are organized chronologically and thematically into four main sections: archaeology and ancient arts, costumes and their artistic representations, wood sculpture and furniture, and Quimper ceramics. Visitors can explore prehistoric art, Gallo-Roman artifacts from the Osismii city, and Ancient Breton galleries featuring Roman and Gothic sculpture, stained glass, and recently recovered 14th-century gold coins. The upper floors showcase traditional Finistère costumes, furniture, and decorative objects. A major attraction is the collection of over 300 pieces of Quimper pottery and stoneware, illustrating production from the 17th century to the present.

The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions focusing on the arts of Brittany and regional representations from 1850 to 1950. It offers guided tours, workshops, and lectures. Opening hours vary by season: from June to September, it is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. From October to May, it is open daily except Mondays, Sunday mornings, and public holidays. This institution offers a profound insight into Breton heritage, making it an essential stop for travelers interested in the region’s cultural and artistic history.
