Château d'Amboise

The Royal Château d'Amboise is a significant Renaissance landmark in the Loire Valley, renowned for its rich royal history dating back to the Middle Ages. It served as a favorite residence for French kings, including Anne de Bretagne and François I, and is closely associated with sovereigns from Charles VII to Louis XIV. The site offers panoramic views of the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley and houses the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, whose final years were spent nearby. Visitors can explore the royal residence, the chapel, and the gardens, gaining an immersive historical experience through the architecture and a free HistoPad tablet tour.

The castle is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with extended hours until 7:00 p.m. during July. It is closed on January 1 and December 25. Located in the heart of Amboise, the site is accessible via the Emir Abd El-Kader sloping walkway from Place Michel Debré. Admission tickets start from €17.30 for an e-ticket, which provides access to the residence, chapel, gardens, and HistoPad. Reduced rates are available for students (€14.40) and children (€11.00), with free entry for those under 7. Online booking is available to skip lines, and combined tickets may be offered for other regional attractions.

Visitors can choose between a self-guided tour using a free guide or HistoPad, or a guided tour. The area is reachable by TGV, with the nearest station being Tours-Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, 20 km away, as well as by bus, bike, or car with parking available.
