Amboise

Amboise, situated in the Indre-et-Loire department of the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a town of immense historical and cultural significance. Located on the banks of the Loire River, it has been a favorite residence of French kings since the 15th century. The town's most iconic landmark is the Château Royal d'Amboise, an example of French Renaissance architecture. Built by Charles VIII and Francis I, the château features a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with ornate facades, grand halls and beautiful gardens. The château is also the burial place of Leonardo da Vinci, who was invited to France by Francis I and spent his final years in the nearby Clos Lucé, although the identification of the remains is uncertain. The Royal Chapel of Saint-Hubert, located within the château, houses the tomb said to be da Vinci's, which reflects the king's admiration for the artist. In the 19th century the château also held the Algerian leader Abd el-Kader as a prisoner.

The Clos Lucé, or House of Leonardo, is another major attraction, offering insights into the inventor's life and work. The house and its gardens feature interactive exhibits, including full-scale models of da Vinci's inventions, such as flying machines and armored vehicles. The park surrounding the Clos Lucé is a peaceful retreat, with walking paths and sculptures dedicated to the Renaissance master. The old town of Amboise is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets lined with half-timbered houses and historic buildings. The Place du Marché is the central square, surrounded by cafes and restaurants, offering a lively atmosphere, and the Rue Nationale is the main pedestrian street. The town also boasts the Église Saint-Denis, a Gothic church with a distinctive bell tower, and the Château Gaillard, a former royal residence and gardens. The Maison du Vieux Amboise, the Parc de la Chaufferie and the Quai de la Chaufferie are other places named in local guides, along with the Sentier des Bords de Loire, a riverside trail. The Pagode de Chanteloup, a Chinese-style tower of the 18th century, stands in a park outside town.

Amboise is an ideal base for exploring the Loire Valley's châteaux. The town is within easy reach of Chenonceau, known as the 'Lady of the Loire' for its elegant bridge-like structure spanning the Cher River, though more often called the Ladies' Castle; Chambord, the largest of the Loire châteaux, with its distinctive double-helix staircase; and Cheverny, a well-preserved château that inspired the fictional Marlinspike Hall in the Tintin comics. The surrounding countryside is ideal for cycling and hiking, with numerous trails leading through vineyards and forests, along the Loire à Vélo route. The Loire River itself offers opportunities for boat trips and walks along the quays. The local wines of the Touraine-Amboise appellation can be tasted in cellars dug into the limestone. The town also hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including the Amboise Jazz Festival and the Christmas Market, which attract visitors from across Europe.

Getting to Amboise is convenient via train, with regular services from Tours and other major cities in the region. The train station is located across the river from the old town, a short walk from the center. For those traveling by car, Amboise is connected by the A85 motorway. The best time to visit is from May to June and September to October, when the weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for exploring the châteaux and the surrounding countryside. July and August are warm and busy, suitable for those who enjoy summer activities but may encounter larger crowds. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer crowds, making them suitable for sightseeing and wine tasting. Winter is cooler and quieter, offering a serene atmosphere for indoor museum visits and a calmer Loire Valley experience.
