The Château de Loches, part of the Cité Royale de Loches, is a significant medieval fortress in the Loire Valley. Originally built in the 9th century by the Count of Anjou and expanded over centuries, it stands as one of France’s finest examples of military architecture. The site spans over 2 hectares and features two main structures: the Royal Lodge and the Keep. The Keep, standing 37 meters tall, is a well-preserved Romanesque structure that later served as a state prison under Louis XI. It is renowned for its impressive medieval architecture and historical importance, notably as the location where Joan of Arc was imprisoned in the 15th century.

Visitors can explore the ancient keep, which houses a museum of medieval weapons and armor, as well as the luxuriously decorated royal apartments and the dungeon. The site is open daily from 9:30 am, with closing times varying by season: 5:00 pm in winter, 6:00 pm in spring and autumn, and 7:00 pm in summer. It is closed on January 1st and December 25th. Standard admission is €12.50, with concessions available for students and youth at €10.50. Free admission applies to children under 7, job seekers, and certain professionals. A VIP Pass is available for €25.00.

Reservations are mandatory for groups of 15 or more, school groups, guided tours in foreign languages, and general public workshops. Payment is accepted via cash, checks, holiday vouchers, and cards. The combination of historical depth and architectural grandeur makes this site a key destination for understanding the region's royal and military history.
