Château d'If

The Château d'If is a historic fortress located on Île d'If, just off the coast of Marseille. Accessible by boat from the Vieux Port (lower Cannebière), the site is best known for its role as the prison in Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo. The castle features permanent exhibitions dedicated to the novel, graffiti left by prisoners, and a historical film available in multiple languages, including sign language.

Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the monument, which typically lasts 45 minutes, or extend the visit to 1 hour and 30 minutes by exploring the island. The site is open daily except Mondays, with hours varying by season. From April 1 to September 30, it is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. From October 1 to March 31, it is open from 10:00 AM to 5:15 PM. The castle is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25, and may close during bad weather conditions.

Admission costs €7 for individual tickets, with group rates (20+ adults) at €5.50. Free entry is available for visitors under 18, EU nationals aged 18–25, disabled persons with an accompanying adult, jobseekers, and on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. Note that the boat crossing fee is not included in the monument ticket. Payment can be made via cash, credit cards, or specific vouchers. For group visits, compulsory booking is required.
