Église Saint-Jacques

The Église Saint-Jacques stands in the centre of Perros-Guirec, on the Pink Granite Coast of Brittany, and it is built, as one might expect, of the local pink granite that gives the area its name. The stone varies from rose to grey in different light, and the church seems to grow out of the same rocks that line the shore a short distance away. It is the oldest building in town, and its history is reflected in its structure: a Romanesque nave from the eleventh century and a Gothic nave from the fourteenth century stand side by side, so that the interior has two parallel spaces, the older one narrow and dim and the newer one broader and taller.

The exterior is dominated by a massive square tower of granite, topped by a pyramidal spire, which is a familiar landmark across the town and a useful point of orientation for visitors and for sailors. The tower is strongly built, with thick walls and small openings, in keeping with the Breton tradition of sturdy church towers that could withstand the Atlantic winds. The stone is hard and was difficult to carve, which gives the architecture a plain and powerful character, with less fine detail than churches made of softer stone.

Inside, the church is dark and atmospheric, with thick columns and low arches in the Romanesque part. One of its rarities is a carved frieze of Romanesque date, with a motif that includes octopus-like creatures, an unusual subject for a church and often linked to the maritime life of the coast. The mixture of religious and local imagery is a characteristic of Breton churches, where sailors, fishermen and farmers added their own world to the stories of the faith. The windows let in a subdued light, and the quiet of the space is a welcome pause from the busy seafront.

The church is a short walk from the sights that make Perros-Guirec popular. The Plage de Trestraou is the main beach, and the coastal path known as the Sentier des Douaniers leads along the pink rocks toward Ploumanac'h, with its lighthouse and rocks that look like animals. The Marché de Perros-Guirec brings local produce into town, and the Plage de l'Anse de Men-Blavet is another sandy stretch. Boat trips leave for the Sept-Îles bird reserve in season.

Entry is usually free, and the church is open for visitors at set hours. Because it is an active church, dress modestly and avoid services. A visit takes about twenty to thirty minutes. It suits architecture lovers, photographers and anyone interested in the maritime culture of Brittany.
