Fontaine de la Rotonde

The Fontaine de la Rotonde is the most imposing fountain in Aix-en-Provence, located at the bottom of the Cours Mirabeau on Place de la Rotonde. Constructed in 1860 and designed by Théophile de Tournadre, this Neo-classic historic monument stands 12 meters high and 32 meters wide. It features the first cast iron basin in the region and symbolizes Aix’s reputation as the "water capital" of Provence. The fountain’s water supply has evolved from the Zola Canal to the Verdon Canal, and currently originates from the Canal de Provence.

Visitors can observe intricate bronze sculptures, including lions, sirens, and angels, along with three female figures at the top representing key aspects of the city: Justice, facing the Palais de Justice; Commerce and Agriculture, facing Marseille; and Fine Arts, facing Avignon. The structure is illuminated at night, offering a striking visual presence in the evening. As an outdoor public monument, there are no admission fees or specific opening hours, allowing visitors to view it at any time.
