Friche la Belle de Mai

Friche la Belle de Mai is a multifaceted cultural and creative hub in Marseille, situated on the site of the former Seita tobacco factory, which was built in 1939. Open 365 days a year, the complex serves as a workspace for 70 organizations, housing 400 artists and creatives. It hosts approximately 600 public art events annually, attracting over 450,000 visitors.

The site features diverse amenities, including five concert venues, 2,400 m² of exhibition space, an 8,000 m² rooftop terrace, sports areas, gardens, a restaurant, and a bookshop. A key feature is The Tower, a contemporary art facility inaugurated in 2013 as part of the Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture initiative. Designed by architect Mathieu Poitevin, it offers modular exhibition platforms and a large roof terrace with panoramic views of the city. The venue focuses on international and prospective contemporary art through artist residencies and temporary exhibitions.

Access is available via two pedestrian entrances at 41 rue Jobin and 12 rue François Simon. The site is accessible for disabled visitors. Due to strict security measures under the "Vigipirate" plan, large bags are prohibited, and visitors may undergo visual checks or pat-downs. This industrial heritage site has been transformed into a vibrant center for culture and community, offering a unique blend of historical architecture and modern artistic expression. Visitors can explore the gardens, attend events, or enjoy the views from the rooftop, making it a significant destination for those interested in contemporary culture and urban regeneration in Marseille.
