Grotte de Baume-les-Messieurs

The Grotte de Baume-les-Messieurs, also known as the Grottes de Beaume-les-Messieurs or Source du Dard, is an active river cave located in Baume-les-Messieurs, near Lons-le-Saunier. Discovered in 1610 and developed as a show cave in 1900, it opened to the public in 1901. The site features a 2,303-meter path illuminated by electric and colored lighting, maintaining a constant temperature of 11°C throughout the year.

Visitors access the cave via guided tours lasting approximately 60 minutes. The route highlights key attractions such as the impressive spring of the river Dard, which flows strongly during snow melt, and the Catafalque Gallery, which stands 80 meters high. The cave is inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by traces of rock shelters discovered on site.

Admission fees apply, with adult tickets costing approximately €9. Photography is allowed within the cave. However, the site is not fully accessible to those with reduced mobility. The attraction attracts approximately 50,000 visitors annually.
