Jardin de la Fontaine

The Jardin de la Fontaine in Nîmes is a historic 15-hectare park certified as a "remarkable garden" by the French Ministry of Culture. Recognized as Europe’s first public garden, its creation began in 1745 under King Louis XV, with design by engineer Jacques Philippe Mareschal. The site was developed around the ancient Gallic source 'Nemausus,' combining an 18th-century classical layout with Mediterranean landscaping. In the 19th century, Mayor Augustin Cavalier expanded the grounds, introducing diverse vegetation such as Aleppo pine and holm oak, and adding pathways leading to features like a rock-style grotto and the dominant Tour Magne.

Visitors can explore various areas, including a rock garden, the Montgolfier basin with aquatic plants, and the Mazet garden. The park also contains Roman monuments, including the remains of the Temple of Diana. The garden offers shaded rest areas, picnic spots, public toilets, and is pet-friendly. Disabled access is available on the lower level.

Opening hours vary by season: the park is open daily from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM in March, and from 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM from April to August. Specific partial opening hours apply from late June through September. This green space provides a peaceful escape in the city center, blending historical architecture with natural beauty.
