Mer de Glace

The Mer de Glace in Chamonix is a major glacial attraction accessible via the Montenvers Rack Railway. Visitors depart from Chamonix Mont-Blanc station for a scenic train journey to the summit, where they can access the Balcon Nord viewpoint and the Mer de Glace Cable Car. The site features the Glaciorium, an educational center dedicated to glaciology, and the famous Ice Cave, which is formed naturally within the glacier. Access to the ice cave requires a specific ticket that includes the round-trip train and gondola.

Practical planning is essential due to seasonal variations in operations. The site is currently closed, with temperatures recorded at 15°C. During the 2025–2026 season, opening hours vary significantly; winter schedules typically run from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, while summer hours extend from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Trains depart at intervals of 20 to 60 minutes depending on demand. Visitors must note the last departure times for the ice cave, which range from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM based on the season. Annual closures occur, such as in mid-May 2026, and temporary closures may affect the cable car or cave.

Admission costs include a pedestrian ticket for the Balcon Nord at 68.40€ and a combined ticket for the train, gondola, ice cave, and Glaciorium at 49.70€. A MultiPass is available for extended stays. The site is partially accessible for wheelchair users, though dining areas are not. Dogs are permitted on leashes, and children from 12 months old are allowed. Facilities include the Montenvers Refuge for accommodation and dining options like the Bar des Glacier.
