Cogwheel train to the Mer de Glace glacier
The Montenvers Railway is a cogwheel train attraction in Chamonix that transports passengers from the Chamonix station at 1,042 meters to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace station at 1,913 meters. The journey takes approximately twenty minutes, offering scenic views of the ascent up 1,000 meters. The train is famous for its distinctive red carriages and provides access to the Mer de Glace glacier and the associated ice cave.
Operating hours vary significantly by season. From April 30 to August 30, the train runs daily from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, with the last ascent at 5:00 pm and the last descent at 5:30 pm. Frequency ranges from every 20 to 60 minutes depending on demand. During the winter season, hours are typically shorter, such as 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Visitors planning to visit the ice cave must note that the last departure for the cave is at 3:30 pm in summer and 2:00 pm in winter. The cable car and ice cave are closed from May 11 to June 5, and the train itself has specific annual closure dates, such as May 18–22, 2026.
Admission prices for adults include €31.50 for a round-trip train ticket and €26.50 for a one-way trip. Combined tickets are available, such as €49.70 for the train, gondola, and ice cave, or €42.30 for the train and gondola. Children aged 12 months and older are authorized to ride. Gift vouchers are also available for purchase. This railway serves as a primary access point for experiencing the high-altitude environment of the Mont Blanc massif.
