Musée d'Histoire de Marseille

The Musée d'Histoire de Marseille offers a comprehensive look at the city’s 2,600-year history, located within the Centre Bourse shopping mall near the Canebière. Opened in 1983 and fully renovated to reopen in September 2013, the museum utilizes its unique underground setting to display archaeological remains discovered during the mall’s construction. These include Greek, Roman, and medieval artifacts that trace the evolution of Marseille from a Phocaean trading post to a modern metropolis.

Visitors explore 3,500 square meters of exhibition space organized into 13 chronological stages. The displays combine multimedia systems with ancient remains, such as quays and warehouses, to illustrate the shared history of the city and its port. A glass facade on the upper level offers views of the historic port, connecting the indoor experience with the outside world. The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. To avoid queues, it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance.
