Parc du Château de Vizille

The Parc du Château de Vizille, part of the Domaine de Vizille near Grenoble, is a cultural heritage site featuring a park and garden open to the public year-round with free access. Originally designed by Lesdiguières as a pleasure garden, the 100-acre estate offers relaxation and discovery through its lake, canals, forest with bridle paths, rose garden, and formal flower beds. It also serves as a wildlife park where species such as swans, deer, and herons roam freely.

The site is historically significant as the location where the Estates General of the Dauphiné met on July 21, 1788, an event considered a precursor to the French Revolution. Although the original meeting room (Salle du jeu de paume) was destroyed by fire in 1865, its location is now marked by a tree-lined terrace. The Domaine houses the Museum of the French Revolution, situated in the castle since 1984. The museum features collections of art and historical artifacts, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, tapestries, and items from the Ancien Régime to the Third Republic, such as stones from the Bastille. It explores the artistic and cultural transformations of the Enlightenment and Romanticism periods.

Opening hours vary by season. From March 1 to May 31, the park is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and weekends from 9 am to 7 pm (closed May 1). From June 1 to August 31, it is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm. From September 1 to October 24, it is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and weekends from 9 am to 7 pm. The museum is open daily except Tuesdays, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 6:00 pm (from April onwards). Rules include no pets (except guide dogs), bicycles, or motor vehicles.
