The Lion of Belfort

The Lion of Belfort is a monumental sandstone sculpture located in Belfort, France, carved directly into a rock face. Created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the same artist who designed the Statue of Liberty, this massive lion symbolizes the resilience and defiance of the people of Belfort during the Franco-Prussian War. The sculpture depicts a lion with its paw raised, representing the city’s refusal to surrender despite being besieged for 103 days in 1870–1871. Although Bartholdi began the work in 1874, the monument was never officially inaugurated due to a financial disagreement between the sculptor and the town regarding the remaining funds.

Visitors can view the Lion from various vantage points around the city, with the best perspectives often found from the surrounding parks and the Citadel. The scale of the sculpture is impressive, standing 11 meters high and 22 meters long, making it a striking landmark visible from a distance.
