Traboules of Lyon

Lyon’s traboules are a unique network of hidden passageways that offer travelers a distinctive way to navigate the city. Derived from the Latin trans ambulare, meaning "to walk through," these shortcuts pass through buildings to connect streets and access inner courtyards, known as miraboules. With approximately 500 traboules spread across more than 230 streets, they are concentrated in three main areas: Vieux-Lyon, Croix-Rousse, and the Presqu'île.

Visitors will find that about 80 of these passages are open to the public, primarily within the historic districts. In Vieux-Lyon, roughly 200 Renaissance-era traboules invite exploration, while the slopes of Croix-Rousse feature around 160 passages from the 18th and 19th centuries. These areas were crucial during the industrial era, allowing silk workers, or Canuts, to transport goods efficiently. The architecture often includes spiral staircases and hidden gardens, providing a glimpse into Lyon’s rich heritage.

When exploring, remember that most traboules are privately owned and located in residential areas. They are generally accessible between 7 am and 7 pm, but visitors should remain respectful and quiet. Notable routes include the passage connecting 9 Rue Laurencin to Cour des Trois Passages and the link between 13 Rue de la Poulaillerie and 2 Rue des Forces. This network offers a fascinating blend of history and urban design, allowing travelers to discover Lyon’s hidden layers.
