A guided crossing of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Mont, approaching it on foot across the sands just as medieval pilgrims did. At low tide the sea withdraws for kilometres, revealing sandbanks, channels and mudflats around the island. Walks usually set out from the Normandy shore, for example from Genêts or the Bec d'Andaine, and follow routes chosen by the guide according to the day's tides and the state of the sands.

The bay has some of the strongest tides in Europe. The sea can return very quickly, and the sands hide areas of quicksand, so crossing without a licensed guide is dangerous. Guides know the shifting ground and the tide times, and they explain the bay's natural history along the way, from the salt meadows grazed by sheep to the birds that feed on the flats. Some walks include a stop at the islet of Tombelaine, others head straight for the Mont, and there are shorter themed outings as well as full crossings.

Walkers usually go barefoot or in shoes that can get wet and muddy, as there are river channels to wade across. Crossings run mainly from spring to autumn and must be booked in advance, with departure times set by the tides. The walk to and from the Mont takes several hours, so bring water, sun protection and a layer against the wind. Entry to the abbey is not included and is booked separately.
