Cathédrale Saint-Front

The Cathédrale Saint-Front in Périgueux is a significant tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, classified as such in 1998 as part of the routes to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Located in the city center, this Roman Catholic cathedral is renowned for its Byzantine-style architecture. It features a unique Greek cross plan and a central dome that resembles St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The structure was restored in the 19th century by Abadie, who used it as a model for the Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

The cathedral’s history is intertwined with the legend of Saint Front, a disciple of Saint Peter who was sent to Périgueux in the 1st–4th centuries. It is credited with miracles, including slaying the Coulobre dragon. The site features a 12th-century bell tower, a Baroque altarpiece, and a historic chandelier from Napoleon III’s wedding. It was classified as a historic monument in 1840.

For visitors, the cathedral is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with hours extended to 7:00 PM in the summer. Admission is paid, and visitor guides as well as guided tours (by reservation) are available. Parking is available nearby.
