Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur
Unfinished High Gothic cathedral with vaults over 40m
The Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur in Narbonne is a striking example of High Gothic architecture, distinguished by its unique choir with vaults rising over 40 meters. Built between 1272 and 1340, the cathedral remains unfinished due to historical political decisions; local Consuls refused to demolish city ramparts to provide stone for the structure. This unfinished state adds to its distinctive character, offering visitors a rare glimpse into medieval construction challenges.
Key features include the axial chapel of Our Lady of Bethlehem, which houses a 14th-century polychrome stone altarpiece, and the Treasure Room (also known as the Acoustic Room). The Treasure Room displays significant liturgical objects, including ivories, silverware, gold items, and tapestries. Located at Rue Armand Gautier, 11100 Narbonne, the cathedral welcomes groups of up to 300 people and offers services in English and Spanish.
Opening hours vary by season. From June 1 to September 30, the cathedral is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Between October 1 and December 31, it is open daily from 10:00 AM to 12:45 PM and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Visitors should note that groups are not accepted on Sundays and Saturday mornings during mass (10:00 AM – 11:30 AM). The site is not accessible to disabled visitors. Weekly masses are held on Sundays at 11:00 AM and Fridays at 10:00 AM. The cathedral may also close exceptionally for religious ceremonies such as weddings or burials. A shop is available on-site, and 15-day pass tickets are offered. For further information, contact +33 4 68 90 31 34.
