Château de Suscinio

The Château de Suscinio stands on the Rhuys peninsula, near Sarzeau, on the south coast of Brittany, a few kilometres from the Gulf of Morbihan, and it is one of the most evocative medieval castles in the region. The Dukes of Brittany built it from the thirteenth century as a country residence and hunting lodge, and it was a favourite retreat of the dukes, who came here to hunt in the surrounding woods and marshes and to relax away from the court. The castle has a wide moat, thick walls and a ring of towers, and it combines the look of a fortress with the comforts of a residence, with large windows and living quarters.

The setting is remarkable. The castle stands in a flat landscape of salt marshes and meadows, close to the sea, and from a distance, it seems to rise out of the reeds, its pale stone towers and slate roofs reflected in the moat. The surrounding marsh is a nature reserve, full of birds, and the nearby beach of Suscinio is a wide sweep of sand facing the Atlantic, so the castle is part of a landscape that visitors can explore on foot. Walking along the track beside the moat, you can see the full ring of walls and towers, and the dramatic contrast between the heavy defences and the open, light-filled land.

Inside, the castle has been restored, and visitors can see the great hall, the chapel and the kitchens, as well as rooms with exhibitions on the history of the dukes and on life in the Middle Ages. The castle is known for its collection of medieval floor tiles, decorated ceramic tiles that once paved the rooms, which are among the best of their kind in France and show animals, coats of arms and geometric patterns. There are displays of medieval clothing and costume, and the site often hosts events with historical re-enactments, shows and activities for children, which makes it an excellent place for families. The castle fell into decay after the dukes lost interest in it, and for a time it was used as a quarry for building stone. It was bought by the département of Morbihan in the 1960s and has been carefully restored since then.

The nearby sights include Vannes, with its walled old town, the Place du Martray and the Vannes City Walls, and the Gulf of Morbihan, with its islands, which can be visited on boat tours from ports such as the Port du Crouesty. Bring a jacket, since the sea wind can be cool.
