Vannes City Walls (Remparts de Vannes)

The Vannes City Walls, or Remparts de Vannes, are one of the best-preserved fortifications in Brittany, offering visitors a tangible connection to the region’s medieval history. The origins of the enclosure date back to the 3rd century when the Romans first built defensive structures in the area. However, the current walls were significantly reinforced and extended in the late 14th century under the reign of John IV to better protect the population. This expansion created a continuous defensive perimeter that remains largely intact today.

Walking along the ramparts provides a unique perspective of the city, combining historical architecture with scenic views. The walls feature several notable towers, including the Calmont Tower, which stands as a significant witness to local history. Although Louis XIV later neglected this architectural heritage and sold stones from other parts of the fortifications to fund wars, the core structures of Vannes’ walls survived.
