Église Saint-Jean

The Baptistère Saint-Jean in Poitiers is a rare 4th-century religious monument and one of Europe's earliest Christian structures. It symbolizes the official adoption of Christianity in France and is considered one of the oldest preserved Christian buildings in Western Europe, with origins dating back to the 5th century. Originally threatened with demolition in the 19th century to make way for road construction, it was saved by the French government and designated a protected historic monument in 1846.

Located a few steps from the historic center, within the first episcopal quarter alongside the Cathedral and the bishop's residence, the site evolved from an octagonal baptismal pool used for full immersion into a parish church named Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The interior houses Gothic frescoes superimposed on 11th-century paintings and a collection of Merovingian sarcophagi, offering a tangible connection to over fifteen centuries of history.
