Gallery of Battles

The Gallery of Battles is a central feature of the Museum of the History of France at Versailles, established in 1837 by King Louis-Philippe. Designed by architect Frédéric Nepveu, this vast hall transforms the former royal residence into a public museum dedicated to showcasing 15 centuries of French history. The gallery is part of a larger collection that includes over 6,000 paintings, 3,000 sculptures, and numerous artifacts arranged across key sections such as the Coronation Room and the Empire Rooms.

Visitors can explore the Gallery of Battles as part of a standard visit to the Palace of Versailles. Entry is included in all standard tickets, and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. The Palace itself is open daily except Mondays, with the Trianon estate opening Tuesday to Sunday at noon. Visitors are advised to allow approximately 1.5 hours to visit the building, with the Gallery of Battles often recommended as an early stop around 10:00 am.

The museum attracts approximately one million visitors annually, offering a comprehensive overview of French military and political history. Strict security checks are in place at the entrance, and large baggage exceeding 55x35x25 cm is prohibited. Audioguides are available in 12 languages, and a mobile app provides interactive maps and real-time updates to enhance the experience.
