The Queen's Hamlet (Hameau de la Reine)

The Queen’s Hamlet (Hameau de la Reine) is a model village located within the Trianon Estate at the Palace of Versailles. Built between 1783 and 1786 under the direction of architect Richard Mique, it was commissioned by Marie Antoinette to extend the English Gardens. The site is divided into two distinct areas separated by a stone bridge. The southern Reception Area includes the Queen’s House, boudoir, billiard room, and a decorative windmill. These structures feature rustic exteriors but contain richly furnished interiors designed for hosting small parties. The northern Agricultural Area contains functional structures such as a barn, working dairy, model dairy, fisherman’s cottage, and guard house. The cottages are arranged in a crescent formation along the eastern bank of an artificial lake, blending various rural architectural influences to create aesthetic coherency.

The hamlet is open daily except Mondays. Hours vary by season: from 12:00 pm to 6:30 pm from April to October, and from 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm from November to March. Access requires a Passport ticket or a specific "Trianon and Marie-Antoinette's Estate" ticket, which can be purchased online or on-site. The estate features over 500 points of interest, accessible via an interactive map. Amenities include restaurants, shops, and audioguides. This site offers a unique glimpse into the private life of Marie Antoinette and the pastoral fantasies of the late 18th-century French court. Visitors can explore the charming cottages and gardens, experiencing a peaceful retreat from the grandeur of the main palace.
