Maison Bonaparte
Napoleon's birthplace in Ajaccio's old town
The Maison Bonaparte in Ajaccio is a historic monument and national museum located in the old town on Rue Saint-Charles. It serves as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born there on August 15, 1769. The house was converted into a museum in 1967 and declared a national museum by the French government. The site offers insight into the political and cultural environment of the 18th century through collections of period furniture, historical artifacts, portraits, and memorabilia related to the Bonaparte family and the First Empire. The house itself reflects the family's rising social status, having been expanded and remodeled since they moved in at the end of the 17th century.
The museum is open daily except Mondays. Hours vary by season: from October 1 to March 31, it is open from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:15 pm to 4:30 pm. From April 1 to June 30, hours are 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and 1:15 pm to 5:30 pm. During the high season from July 1 to September 30, the museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Admission fees are €10 for full price and €8 for concessions, including non-EU residents aged 18–25, large families, and groups of 10 or more. Free admission applies to EU residents under 26, teachers, disabled visitors, job seekers, and all visitors on the first Sunday of each month.
No reservation is required for individuals, but it is compulsory for groups. The museum is accessible via several bus routes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8) and is near the bus station and maritime port. Visitors are advised that face masks are recommended and barrier gestures, such as using hydro-alcoholic gel, are required. For further information, contact the museum at +33 (0)4 95 21 43 89 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. This location is a significant cultural landmark for understanding Napoleon’s origins.
