Palais Fesch

The Palais Fesch in Ajaccio houses the Musée Fesch, the primary fine arts museum in Corsica. Located at 50-52 rue Cardinal Fesch in the Borgu d'Ajaccio quarter, the building was constructed starting in 1827 under Mgr Péraldi and completed in 1837 by architect Frassato. It was established by Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Napoleon I’s uncle, who bequeathed 1,000 paintings from his vast private collection to the city. Although many original masterpieces were sold by Fesch and his heir Joseph Bonaparte, the museum retains a significant collection ranging from Italian Primitives to 20th-century Corsican painters. The palace underwent significant restoration in 1987.

Visitors can explore the chronological art collection, which includes works by major European artists. The Imperial Chapel, located within the south wing, is open only during the summer months. The museum is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, with free wheelchairs and strollers available upon request. Security protocols are in place, requiring visitors to open bags and jackets at the checkpoint; large luggage is prohibited.

Admission costs €9 for full price and €6 for reduced or group rates. A one-time loyalty card is available for €30. Disabled visitors and one companion enter for free with proof. Opening hours vary by season: from November 1 to April 30, the museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. From May 1 to October 31, hours extend to 6:00 pm. The museum is closed from January 1 to 16 and on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. For group bookings, especially in the off-season, reservations can be made via email.
